From the Ground Up: How Kirstinâs Sparkle Began to Shine
A Unicornâs Tale: The Roots of Resilience
It was another lively morning at Sparkle Ridge Farm, and the barnyard was buzzing with excitement. Phoenix trotted nervously toward Nash, who stood proudly in the center, his weathered frame steady and his eyes wise. Todayâs lesson would be about beginningsâthe kind that plant seeds of courage and determination.
âPhoenix,â Nash began with a twinkle in his eye, âlet me take you back to a story of grit, adventure, and learning. This is the tale of how Kirstin became the remarkable woman she is today. Like all great journeys, it starts with humble beginnings.â
The First Tumble
Kirstinâs story began at just four years old. Nash described her first encounter with a horse, a spirited creature who wasnât too thrilled with a tiny rider on its back. âShe didnât ride for longâjust long enough to land on the ground,â Nash chuckled. âBut even then, you could see it in her eyes: she wasnât giving up.â
Kirstinâs parents, new to the horse world, quickly realized they had much to learn. They purchased a beautiful but inexperienced horse, not understanding the challenges that lay ahead. âThey didnât know what âgreen brokeâ meant,â Nash explained, âbut they learned quickly. And so did Kirstin.â
Finding Her Footing
Determined to master her craft, Kirstin began formal lessons, where she met her first true mentor. Her connection with her pony, Peter, grew, and by the age of six, she was competing in her first shows. âShe was fearless, even then,â Nash told Phoenix. âBut the real lessons came when she faced heartbreak.â
One Christmas, Kirstin lost Peter to colic, a devastating blow for someone so young. âShe could have stopped right there,â Nash said, his voice filled with emotion. âInstead, she channeled her grief into love for her momâs mare, Breezy. Thatâs where her passion for Western Pleasure began.â
The Mentors Who Made a Difference
Phoenix leaned in closer as Nash described how Kirstin sought guidance from seasoned trainers. Julie Hawk was among those who helped her hone her skills. âShe started small, learning what a lead was,â Nash chuckled, âand before long, she was competing at the Minnesota State 4-H Horse Show.â
Each show was a stepping stone, not just for ribbons but for lessons in discipline, perseverance, and humility. âShe learned that winning wasnât everything. It was about the bond she built with her horses and the growth she achieved with every ride,â Nash said.
Billy: A Horse and a Lifeline
When Kirstin met Billy, a green-broke gelding, her journey took on new meaning. âBilly wasnât just a horse; he was a partner in her journey through high school and beyond,â Nash explained. âWhen the world felt heavy with challenges, Billy carried herâliterally and figuratively.â
Billy and Kirstin became an unstoppable team, earning state trips and numerous placings at the Minnesota State 4-H Horse Show from 2013 to 2017. âHe taught her that hard work, patience, and love could overcome anything,â Nash said.
A Sparkle in the Making
By the time Kirstin won WSCA Queen and Ms. Congeniality in 2017, her path was clear. âBut it wasnât just about the titles,â Nash emphasized. âHer sparkle came from withinâfrom every challenge she overcame and every lesson she learned along the way.â
A Lesson for Phoenix
As the sun set over Sparkle Ridge Farm, Phoenixâs eyes glistened with wonder. âSo, Kirstin wasnât always the confident champion she is now?â she asked.
âNo one starts as a champion,â Nash said softly. âBut with every fall, every heartbreak, and every triumph, Kirstin became the woman who inspires us all. And Phoenix, you have that same sparkle inside you.â
Phoenix stood a little taller, her horn shimmering faintly in the fading light. âI think I understand now. Itâs not just about the journeyâitâs about who I become along the way.â
âExactly,â Nash said, his voice warm with pride. âAnd this is only the beginning of your story.â
